I have a new hobby that I’ve recently taken up with my wife: hiking. It’s a great way to get in shape while enjoying Mother Earth.

Good news: we started. Bad news: we started on one of the hardest trails in California. I’ll spare you the gruesome details, but suffice it to say, I was in severe pain by the end of the first day. I mean, beginning with a 10,000 foot elevation? In the wrong shoes? Without quite enough water as needed? Not very smart.

But you know what? We got smart really quickly.

It’s like writing.

I love to write. I always have. But I wasn’t very good out of the gate. But then, who is?

Everyone has to start somewhere, right? And this—my first blog of a new & improved website, will be that starting point.

For the record, I promise my blogs will be engaging, thought-provoking, and chock full of tasty morsels of intellectual stimulation. It will be peppered with witty stories, eye-catching graphics and photos, and some behind-the-scenes meanderings of what my life as an author is like. I hope you’ll enjoy the journey with me.

I am and always have been a student of life. I love to read new authors, learn new facts, and investigate new worlds. Good thing, because I believe that’s one of the crucial ingredients that makes for a becoming better writer.  Yes, that’s an Unsplash photo, but I promise that on this upcoming journey, I’ll share my personal photos of my favorite writing spots, the projects I’m working on, and all the tiny details us writers enjoy sharing.

Going back a bit further…

As a quick starting point, my first career was in radio. I started at a small, barely-listened-to day-timer (only operates during daylight hours), in the tiny hometown of Lynchburg, VA.

Yep, I recall the days when it was only my parents who were listening…at 6AM on a Saturday morning. After I honed my chops, I snagged an afternoon show at the #1 AM station in town. Many people said I had really made it. But I hadn’t even gotten started.

I went from there to the Norfolk/Va. Beach market, where I was working nights—mainly because I was doing graduate work during the day. While filling in for the afternoon guy, I got “discovered” by a program director who was scouring the South/East for a new Afternoon personality for the #1 Adult Contemporary show in Detroit.

I took the job and never looked back.

Long story short, I went from Detroit—working afternoons and then mornings. From there I went to Chicago, where I hosted two afternoon shows and two morning shows. After almost five years, I “went West young man,” to Los Angeles, where I worked for the Westwood One & Armed Forces Radio Networks.

After transitioning from Hard Rock to Hot Country, I landed a gig at the #1 Country Morning Show in America. It didn’t end there but that was the pinnacle of my radio career. And it was one helluva ride!

After the New York station got bought, and I got replaced by the world-famous Rupaul, as the station shifted from Country to Dance, I got bounced and decided to take a year off from radio, taking a position as a QVC Home Shopping Host. Yeah, that was interesting.

Moving back to LA, I decided to try my hand at acting. I couldn’t land a commercial gig to save my life, but soon after began picking up small parts in several movies and television shows. I gotta say that acting—while is insecure as heck, is a fun way to make a living.

Okay, that’s going to do it for now, but next time we meet, I’ll tell share how I went from Radio and Acting to making films, before ending up at my current career of writing thrillers.
